It’s Father’s Day and as a tribute to all Fathers everywhere I’m going to share something very personal with you.
Meet my Dad. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp the instant he turned 17. He was wounded in Viet Nam. Got his law degree at 30 and then went on to run the legal department for a large multinational energy company until he went out on his own.
We had a fun chat in this week’s podcast and I think you’ll get a kick out of hearing his stories, his wisdom and his humor. The poem below is something I wrote for him and which we talk about in our podcast interview. Hear the story behind it in this episode of Speak Like a Leader – just scroll down a bit more.
And, I wish you a Happy Father’s Day.

Know your People
John F. Bates, Esq. is the most influential man in my life. He gave me his name, and along with my Mom, he gave me what I believe is a great foundation for life. A number of people have told me he’s the best contract attorney in Utah, where he practices, and he’s got a deep commitment to fairness and justice. At 17 years old he enlisted in the Marine Corp. and the rest, as they say, is history.
