Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS Case Study
One TEDx talk became a 15+ year leadership and pitch-coaching partnership
The work began when Melinda Richter asked John Bates to help her prepare a TEDx talk in San Diego. It grew into a long-term relationship supporting JLABS leaders, innovation communities, and startup founders across the United States and Europe.
For more than 15 years, John has been a go-to pitch and communication coach for JLABS—helping scientific innovators make complex ideas clear, credible, and worth believing in.
“If all their events are this good, I’m coming to everything.”— Feedback JLABS received after John’s community programs
The beginning
A talk that had to do more than inform
Melinda Richter was preparing to speak at TEDxAmericanFascinationConference. John helped her shape and deliver a talk that made her expertise accessible, personal, and memorable.
The talk earned a standing ovation. More importantly, it began a working relationship built on a shared conviction: communication is not the finishing touch on leadership. It is how leadership reaches other human beings.
As JLABS grew, the work expanded with it.
The organizational challenge
Different audiences. One need for credibility and connection.
JLABS sits at the intersection of science, entrepreneurship, investment, and a global enterprise. Its leaders and founders communicate with corporate decision-makers, scientists, investors, startup teams, local innovation communities, and internal Johnson & Johnson stakeholders.
Facts matter in every one of those rooms. But facts alone do not create confidence, community, or momentum.
The challenge was to translate complexity without diminishing it—and help ambitious scientific ideas sound human without making them sound generic.
The work
Their go-to pitch coach became a trusted partner across the organization.
John did not simply coach a succession of isolated presentations. He trained the JLABS leadership team, coached organizational leaders one-to-one, led workshops and community events across the United States and Europe, and repeatedly worked with startup founders preparing for investor pitches and internal Johnson & Johnson presentations.
- Training for the JLABS leadership team
- One-to-one leadership communication and speech preparation
- Startup pitch and narrative coaching
- Investor and corporate presentation preparation
- Community-building workshops and events
- Support across the United States and Europe
The work went beneath delivery technique. John helped leaders and founders clarify what they wanted to stand for, understand what their audiences needed, and communicate their expertise without losing either the rigor or the human being behind it.
The ripple effect
Better communication helped build stronger teams and stronger communities.
JLABS credited John’s workshops and events as foundational to building thriving innovation communities. The impact was larger than whether one session went well. The experience shaped what people expected from JLABS—and whether they wanted to return.
When the communication is consistently valuable, people do not merely attend. They trust the community, participate more fully, and want to be part of what happens next.
The leadership result
From one successful talk to a voice people requested.
Melinda says that, during her tenure, she became the most requested internal speaker at Johnson & Johnson. She credits John as a key force behind her success in public speaking and media.
That outcome captures the deeper purpose of the work. The goal is not simply to complete a successful presentation. It is to become a leader people want to hear from—a trusted voice capable of representing an organization, an idea, and a community.
The outcome
Communication became an organizational asset.
The JLABS leadership team and individual leaders developed communication they could use across consequential situations.
Startup teams shaped clearer narratives for investors and corporate decision-makers.
High-value programs helped JLABS earn participation, trust, and repeat engagement.
This is L=f(c) at work: leadership is a function of communication.
When leaders communicate with clarity, credibility, and humanity, they do more than deliver a message. They create the conditions in which people, ideas, and communities can thrive.
The broader principle
Your innovators should not have to “dumb down” their expertise. They need more of their expertise to land.
Scientific and technical rigor is not the enemy of connection. But people do not make meaning from information alone. They need a clear idea, a human reason to care, and a leader they can trust.
That is the deeper work behind Executive Speaking Success leadership programs and private executive coaching.
